The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has proposed the inclusion of the Severe Sepsis and Septic Shock Management Bundle in the Hospital Value Based Purchasing Program (HVBP).

  • This data is already being collected for the Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting (IQR) program.
  • Beginning calendar year 2024 the data being used for IQR will also be used to determine performance for HVBP fiscal year 2026 payment determinations.
  • The sepsis bundle will be part of the safety domain which will contribute 25% toward the overall HVBP score.
    • Currently, performance within the safety domain is only based upon hospital acquired infections that are reported to the National Healthcare Safety Network, which is a surveillance system for the Centers for Disease Control.
    • Eligible sepsis bundle cases will be determined by claims data e.g., the presence of certain ICD-10 sepsis codes.
    • Sepsis bundle performance will be based on abstracted data.
