CMS publishes hospital star ratings annually on Hospital Compare.
• The star rating is based on multiple measures, which are divided into 7 measure groups.
• Some measures are based on data exclusively from Medicare patients while other measures such as sepsis care are based on all patients. Sepsis care is one of 9 measures that combined account for 4% of a hospital’s star rating.
• The star rating ranges from 1 to 5 with only 8.9% of hospitals in 2020 reaching 5-star status.
